Both melee and ranged combat uses the staff as weapon melee combat consisting of martial art moves while ranged combat allows the player to cast magical bolts at a target, with controls similar to a third person shooter. The player may engage in melee or ranged combat. When the character levels up, skills points may be used to purchase these spells, each with a level requirement. Spells must be assigned to quick keys before they can be used. Use of magic will drain the player of mana, which regenerates quite quickly. The game introduces three schools of magic: Blood Magic, primary used for magical melee attacks Soul Magic, primary used for magical ranged spells and Summoning, which summons monsters to aid the player. During this time, the player will learn the basic game mechanics quite unique to this game. In the beginning, the player is tasked with to meet three Master Wizards and gain their stamp of approval before entering the final examination for graduation. In Avencast: Rise of the Mage, the player takes on the role of a young apprentice mage in the Avencast Magic Academy. Soon he discovered that the child had a great gift for magic and when the child was old enough, he send him to the mage academy of Avencast in the hopes that he would be able to satisfy his desire to know more about magic there. He chose to take care of this lost child and raise him. In it he finds a baby with a strange amulet around his neck. As he walked towards the stream he noticed a basket on the shore.
